Friendship According to a “Wise” and Slightly Cynical 12 Year Old

True friendship is a hard thing to find these days. This is because people, in this anti-intellectual, fluffy culture, haven’t been taught what friendship is, or what being a friend is.

Friendship is not having someone to compare your new clothes, or new phone, or your money with. Friendship is not just having someone go to the mall with you and freak out over Gucci purses that no one can really afford.

A friend is not someone who makes you feel good all the time, or someone who laughs when you do something wrong.

A friend is not someone who makes fun of you all the time with “playful” jabs that really hurt your feelings. Newsflash – calling people nerds, retards, etc. isn’t cute, appealing, or funny. It makes you look mean and immature, offends the other person, and ultimately drives them away from you. Same thing with guys, by the way.

A friend is someone who builds you up and gives you wise advice, even when it stings. When it does sting, but it’s from solid advice (like this paper), a good friend is not trying to be mean to you. She’s trying to be a good friend. You should do the same.

There is a time for playful jabs, but some people have to be reminded like they’re still 4 years old – do to others as you would have them do to you.

A friend is someone who holds you back when you’re about to do something wrong. She needs the same guidance from you.

True friendship is one of the strongest bonds people can have. 1 Samuel 18:1 says, “As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” David and Jonathan loved each other deeply. The empty-headed, shallow fools that most 12 year olds are today would say they’re gay. THEY’RE NOT. This is how friendship is meant to be.

The aforementioned empty-headed, shallow 12 year olds will think that I’m saying you shouldn’t have fun with your friends. You should. Just don’t do anything stupid.

And above all, do everything to the glory of God.
